New Specifications...
ZinKlad welcomes   New ZinKlad Specifications
In 2013, MacDermid added 7 new applicators to the ZinKlad program including the first one in Thailand and additional capacity in China and Taiwan. This takes the total to over 70 applicators worldwide

These new applicators, who all meet the ZinKlad audit standards, will replace 5 who no longer meet the performance criteria and have been removed.

The new applicators:

Gilligans - UK
KPS - Thailand
Penglei - China
A. Raymond Tinnerman - Logansport - USA
Ruia - Germany
Yun Lien - China
  This year we have seen the introduction of Ford WSS-M21P52 specification which calls out ZinKlad 96, 250 and 250 M.

  • Navistar approved ZinKlad 250, 1000 and 1000 B to meet CEMS G20 + G22 specifications.
  • Harman automotive approved ZinKlad 96 and 250 (1807978) and ZinKlad 1000 (2383391)

ZinKlad 250 MAs well as the addition of A. Raymond Tinnerman - Logansport, Ford and GMamended their specifications to include more ZinKlad finishes.

A. Raymond Tinnerman - Logansport, Indiana product lines include value add clip fasteners and assembly solutions for all trim segments, power train, electrical distribution, thermal management, and fluid handling is now approved for ZinKlad 250 M.

Ford announced new finish codes within WSS-M21P52. This specification now includes ZinKlad 96, 250 and 250 M.  For further information about these changes, please contact our Ford Key Account Manager Mr. Aaron Pokowski.

To meet increasing demand for high performance, hexavalent chromium-free coatings, MacDermid have approved new applicators in China (Chongqing Botai and Penglei), Taiwan (Yun Lien) and for the first time, Thailand (KPS). Chongqing Botai and Penglei are both approved to ZinKlad 1000. Chongqing Botai along with Yun Lien and KPS for ZinKlad 250.


MacDermid China hosted our second Chinese automotive Anti-Corrosion supply chain seminar in September 2013. Leading engineers from Chinese automotive manufacturers and Tier 1 suppliers, together with electroplaters gathered to discuss the latest drivers and trends in Anti-Corrosion coatings.

ZinKlad EuropeOur Europe ZinKlad 250 program welcomes 2 new applicators, RUIA and Gilligans. In addition to this, with the further demand for zinc-nickel as a high performance coating, our ZinKlad 1000 applicators have been increasingly busier.  In particular satisfying demand for the Ford S450 specification.  

ZinKlad 500 which is free from substances of very high concern (SVHC), is attracting interest from automotive engineers who are looking for a sacrificial undercoat prior to rubber bonding.


New Processes
Torque 'N' Tension 12As the application of Torque 'N' Tension range of dry film lubricants continues to grow, OEM's requested a coefficient of friction between 0.10 and 0.13. MacDermid responded to this request by introducing Torque 'N' Tension 12.

This need is particularly required on harder coatings such as zinc-nickel. The combination of zinc-nickel , TriPass ELV passivates and Torque 'N' Tension 12 is used on self-thread cutting screws. The end result is a tough coating which withstands the self-tapping operation and returns a consistent coefficient of friction!  

ZinKlad for Commercial Vehicles
ZinKlad commercial2013 saw an interest from the commercial vehicle sector to implement hexavalent chromium-free coatings for corrosion protection of ferrous substrates. Two manufacturers directly chose ZinKlad coatings, John Deere and Navistar see above.

Both have chosen ZinKlad 250 due to factors such as:
  • Consistent corrosion protection
  • Global approved applicator base
  • Predictable torque and tension properties

Additionally Navistar specify ZinKlad 1000 for corrosion resistance greater than the standard zinc coating.  ZinKlad 1000 also satisfies their need for an Enviralloy alkaline zinc-nickel process which provides excellent coating ductility, minimal flaking and compatibility with TriPass trivalent chromium passivates.

Following demand from automotive engineers and ZinKlad applicators, MacDermid have introduced technical data sheets for each ZinKlad performance level.

These technical data sheets outline (for each performance level):
  • Typical corrosion resistance
  • Recommended processes
  • Coefficient of friction (where applicable)
  • Recommended applications

These data sheets can be downloaded direct from our ZinKlad Performance Level webpage, or from each relevant ZinKlad performance level page (e.g. ZinKlad 250)
