MacDermid host Chinese automotive supply chain
China POP seminar Suzhou – 26th October 2012
MacDermid, the global surface finishing supplier, chose Suzhou as the venue to host their Decorative and Plating on Plastics seminar for the Chinese automotive supply chain. The emphasis was on presenting new technology to resist premature corrosion by calcium chloride and new design options for vehicle interiors.
Leading technical and design engineers from Chinese automotive manufacturers and Tier 1 suppliers, together with electroplaters, filled the audience to hear about new trivalent chromium deposits and Fashion Finishes, including the innovative In-Mold Decoration.
The seminar opened with Marketing Manager Mr. DiMarco outlining how MacDermid Industrial Solutions and Autotype divisions are integrated into the automotive coating supply chain in the China region.
Mrs Kiw opened the technical session, discussing the corrosion issues that automotive manufacturers have experienced in regions that use calcium chloride as a de-icing salt. After explaining the mechanism of why this salt is so much more corrosive than sodium chloride, she presented today’s approach based on microcracked nickel / chromium and proposed that it does not fully answer all the corrosion issues.
A new technology based on microporous nickel and trivalent chromium was then demonstrated, along with test results which showed its superior corrosion resistance in this situation compared to both microcracked and microporous nickels using hexavalent chromium solutions.
After an interesting case study from Mr. Flint, Technical Manager from MacDermid North America, on best practice for racking and auxiliary anodes in plating on plastic we moved to interior design innovations.
Global Marketing Manager for Decorative Coatings, Mr. Clarke, opened this session. Mr. Clarke showed the audience a new technology which could revolutionize plating on plastics for interior design, a UV cured electrophoretic lacquer. This lacquer can deposit exciting colors straight onto satin nickel electroplated plastic. The session was followed up by Mr. Travi, European OEM Manager, who demonstrated a complementary technology to electroplated plastics, IMD (or In-Mold Decoration). This imparts a beautiful finish, to items such as dashboards, which is much more pleasing to the eye and harder wearing than traditional painted films.

ZinKlad 1000 B meets performance requirements for PS-12182
MacDermid ZinKlad 1000 B is exclusively named for electroplated zinc-nickel coatings in Chrysler specification PS-12182. The PS-12182 specification names Torque 'N' Tension 12 for friction control.
ZinKlad 1000 is based on an 8um metallic zinc-nickel coating, with a trivalent chromium passivation and topcoat. For fasteners the topcoat usually contains an integrated lubricant to optimise the coefficient of friction properties. It is available as either a blue / silver finish or black. The coating gives >1000 hours to first red corrosion.
This finish is designed for threaded fasteners requiring extended corrosion protection plus lubrication such as self tapping screws, thread forming screws for plastic and those with ISO metric screw threads; especially those used in grounding applications.
ZinKlad 1000 is also specified by leading automotive companies including Ford, GM, PSA, Renault and VW / Audi. The addition of these new ZinKlad finishes enables automotive manufacturers to specify even higher levels of performance.

China Anti-corrosion seminar Suzhou – 14th September 2012
MacDermid, the global surface finishing supplier, chose Suzhou as the venue to host their Anti-corrosion seminar for the Chinese automotive supply chain. The emphasis was on meeting high performance demands for corrosion resistant coatings on fasteners, brake callipers and fluid transfer tubes.
Leading engineers from Chinese automotive manufacturers and Tier 1 suppliers, together with electroplaters filled the audience to hear about latest drivers and trends in anti-corrosion coatings. The seminar opened by outlining the latest chemical legislation which impacts Chinese electroplaters.
MacDermid Global Product and OEM Account Managers then presented how their latest technology and quality assurance program, ZinKlad, helps the supply chain meet legislation while delivering high performance coatings. The audience then reviewed two key topics in automotive plating, avoiding hydrogen embrittlement and plating iron brake calliper castings.
The day finished with a dinner where delegates could discuss their own technical issues with the MacDermid surface finishing experts.
One of the major finishing issues today is based around substances with very high concern (SVHC). Within this directive, removing cobalt from passivates is a primary focus. Dr. Smie, Global Product Manager for Anti-corrosion coatings explained how MacDermid have developed solutions which can meet these new directives and legislations.
This section of the seminar was completed by Mr. Ma Jie, president of the China Plating Association, who spoke about legislative impact of waste water legislation on Chinese platers. He explained there is now a request that all platers move to centralised plating parks to facilitate the waste water treatment.
The second half of the seminar focused on technical issues. Aaron Pokowski, Global Ford Account Manager, explained why Ford specifies ZinKlad coatings. “ZinKlad offers a hexavalent chromium-free finish with excellent corrosion and thermal shock resistance and consistent friction properties” he summarized. This was followed by a presentation on plating for braking systems. This application which includes corrosion resistance, thermal cycling, brake fluid compatibility and paint adhesion as key coating requirements, can be satisfied by MacDermid’s latest Kenlevel Ni 12-15 acid zinc-nickel technology.
Finally Glen Breault, Global Account Manager for General Motors, outlined the hydrogen embrittlement process and risk factors. He then presented a case study which proposed that MacDermid best practice pre-treatment processes and Kenlevel acid zinc significantly reduces hydrogen absorption during the plating operation
Mr. Ma Jie summarized the days discussions and value to the Chinese automotive supply chain by praising MacDermid “for the existing environmentally compliant products and research and development into new ones”.

MacDermid were delighted to present Holder GmbH with the latest ZinKlad Approved Platers certificate at the Stuttgart fair in June 2012. Holder, located in Kirchheim / Teck and Lenningen-Unterlenningen in the Stuttgart area of Germany, are now approved to plate to ZinKlad 250 and 1000.

EBRATS is the premier exhibition for the Brazilian surface finishing industry.
It takes place every 3 years and receives customers from all of the industry segments. This year it was hosted at Expo Center Norte, one of the biggest exhibition centres in São Paulo, Brazil, from April 11th to 13th.

This year MacDermid presented our recent acquisition Revestsul, also located in Brazil. This acquisition will complement the MacDermid products portfolio. Revestsul also had a booth at Ebrats, giving an opportunity for visitors of MacDermid and Anion MacDermid to become acquainted with the new member of the family.

LPS and Sundram become ZinKlad Approved Applicators
MacDermid India are very pleased to add LPS (Rohtak) and Sundram Fasteners (Krishnapuram) to our list of ZinKlad Approved Applicators (ZAPs). The approval of these new ZAPs reflects the growing importance of surface finishing to global automotive standards in india market.

MacDermid have received global Ford chemical approval for ZinKlad 1000 and ZinKlad 1000 B (black) to meet their specification Ford S450.
After extensive production testing, which included evaluation of parts in neutral salt spray (ASTM B117), ZinKlad Approved Platers will now be able to apply this coating.
